How to choose a name for a comic character
- Say it out loud. Readers will sound it out in their heads on every page.
- Give the main cast names that start with different letters and have different lengths, so nobody mixes them up in a speech bubble.
- Match the setting. A cultivation sect is full of names like Murong Qingxuan; a Tokyo high school is not.
- Keep one short form. Long fantasy names get shortened in dialogue anyway, so decide the nickname now.
Name order in manga, manhwa and manhua
In Japanese, Korean and Chinese the family name comes first: Tanaka Yui, Kim Seo-yeon, Xiao Yichen. English translations of manga often flip Japanese names to given name first, while manhwa and manhua translations usually keep the original order. Pick one convention and use it everywhere in your comic.
From a name to a character on the page
A name is the start. In a Novel2Comic project, every character who keeps appearing gets a reference sheet with their name on it, and every page that shows them is drawn from that sheet — so the character you named in chapter 1 still looks like themselves in chapter 30.

Are these real Japanese, Korean and Chinese names?
Yes. The Japanese, Korean and Chinese sets are built from real, common surnames and given names, shown surname first the way they are written in those languages, with the original script beside the romanization.
Why are there no name meanings?
Many East Asian names are written with characters chosen by each family, so one spelling can carry several meanings. Rather than guess, check the characters you pick with a native speaker or a dictionary.
How are the fantasy names made?
They are combined from syllables that sound at home in high fantasy, plus a descriptive family name. Every click gives new combinations.
Can I use these names in a published comic?
Yes. Common names are not owned by anyone. Do a quick search to make sure your pick does not match a famous existing character.
Does the comic assistant use the name?
Yes. When a recurring character gets a reference sheet in your Novel2Comic project, their name is written on it, and the assistant refers to them by that name.
